Beijing Destroy the Great Wall

A portion of the Great Wall of China has been restored, or rather massacred: eight kilometers of the famous line of fortification have been clogged with cement. A “renovation” that made Chinese Internet users jump.

Renovation Really?

Was the work done by restorers or building workers? This is the question one is entitled to ask when one sees what the “renovated” portion of the Great Wall of China looks like.

Located in the north-east of the country, the eight-kilometer section of Xiaohekou, built in the Ming Dynasty and considered to be one of the most beautiful parts of the wilderness, is unrecognizable. The steps of the guard road and the battlements of the fortifications disappeared, covered with a thick layer of cement.

“Might explode all this”

A “renovation” that scandalized Chinese Internet users on social networks last week.

“It looks like the work of people who have not even finished primary school”, one of them indignantly, “in view of the result, so much to explode all that.” Others denounce the sacrilegious transformation into skateboard ramp or bike track of this monument classified as a world heritage of humanity by Unesco.

The restoration was actually carried out between 2012 and 2014, but the case broke out only last week, when photos were spread on social networks.

It was not a matter of restoring but of consolidating and preserving the flood work, according to the authorities in Liaoning Province where the section is located.

Two years after the damage, the national administration of the historical heritage promised to punish the possible culprits.

An investigation has been opened. The Department of Protection of the Cultural Heritage of Liaoning assures that he had duly controlled the works … which he himself had ordered. Some local heritage officials could pay for this massacre on the concrete mixer.
